Hire a campervan and take it to France

If you’re asking, “Can you hire a campervan in the UK and take it to France?” – the answer is yes, you absolutely can! Exploring France in a campervan is an incredible way to see the country’s picturesque landscapes, charming villages, and iconic landmarks, all while enjoying the flexibility and comfort of your own mobile home. At Luna Motorhome Hire, we make it easy for you to embark on your French adventure.

Why Take a Campervan to France?

1. Freedom to Explore

A campervan gives you the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want. From the lavender fields of Provence to the wine regions of Bordeaux, Champagne and Burgundy, you can tailor your trip to suit your interests.

2. Affordable Accommodation

Forget the hassle of booking hotels or holiday rentals. A campervan provides both transportation and accommodation, making it a cost-effective way to travel.  It also allows you to stay in places you may not be able to book affordable hotels.

3. Beautiful Camping Spots

France has an extensive network of camp sites, from coastal retreats to tranquil countryside locations. Many offer fantastic facilities, including swimming pools and family-friendly amenities.  There are many resources to find the best place that suits you but we recommend park4night or pitchup.com to find the best sites for your adventure.

4. Cultural Adventures

With your campervan, you can easily explore France’s rich history and culture, visiting iconic sites like Mont Saint-Michel, the Eiffel Tower, and the Loire Valley castles.  From City parks to country views, you can find what ever you are looking for with a little bit of off the beat exploration.

What to Know About Taking a Campervan to France

1. Check Hire Requirements

At Luna Motorhome Hire, we welcome customers who want to take their campervan across the Channel to France. Just let us know your plans so we can ensure the necessary paperwork and insurance are in place.  If you are taking a hired motorhome or campervan into France, then you must have a copy of the insurance, a copy of the original V5 and a letter of authorisation from the company, or you can apply for a VE103 form.

2. Driving Requirements

You’ll need:

  • A valid UK driving licence, it may be prudent to print off your driving license record from the DVLA too.
  • Travel insurance that covers driving in Europe and a copy of your travel insurance.
  • An understanding of French road rules, including the need for a Crit’Air emissions sticker in some cities.
  • You will also need to have on board high-vis jackets for everyone in your hired campervan, alcohol breath testers, spare light bulbs and a warning triangle.  This could be purchased from the hire company or on Amazon for example before your trip.

3. Ferry or Eurotunnel Booking

Choose between a ferry or the Eurotunnel to cross the Channel. Both options accommodate campervans and motorhomes, but booking in advance is recommended, especially during peak travel seasons as they get booked up and more expensive.  Check timings, sometimes travelling during off peak times is cheaper.

4. Additional Costs

There are a few costs to consider, including tolls on French motorways and campsite fees. However, these are often balanced by the savings on accommodation.
