The Best Places to Visit in a Motorhome or Campervan

The Best Places to Visit in a Motorhome or Campervan View Our Motorhomes A small guide to the ultimate road trips from Northamptonshire Waking up, open the motorhome door and step straight into fresh air and ridiculous views never really gets old. That’s the magic of travelling by motorhome or campervan hire. This guide pulls together some of the best-rated motorhome and campervan routes across the UK and Europe, based on what seasoned motorhome goers all rave about. Whether you’ve hired your first motorhome or you’re planning your tenth long tour, here are the standout places to head to. Why motorhome & campervan travel works so well Before we dive into routes, a quick reminder of why this style of travel just…works: Total flexibility – stay an extra night when you fall in love with a spot, or move on if the weather turns. Comfort on tap – your own bed, loo, shower and kettle wherever you park. Cost control – campsites instead of hotels, self-catering instead of eating out every meal. BBQ’s and more. Keep the family together, including the pets. Scenery on demand – lake views one night, wild coastline the next or maybe even close to a city. Most of the routes below can be done in anything from a compact campervan to a family motorhome – just keep an eye on local road and size restrictions as you plan. The UK: world-class road trips on your doorstep The UK is stacked with routes that motorhome bloggers repeatedly rank among the best anywhere in Europe. 1. North Coast 500, Scottish Highlands Often called Scotland’s answer to Route 66, the North Coast 500 (NC500) is a 500-mile loop around the top of the Highlands starting and finishing in Inverness. Why it’s special Wild beaches like Durness and Sango Sands Detours to John o’ Groats, Cape Wrath and Smoo Cave Rugged mountain passes and glassy lochs around every corner Many UK motorhome guides put the NC500 at the very top of their “must-drive” list thanks to its mix of remote coastline, castles and wildlife. Motorhome tips Roads can be narrow and single-track – allow time and use passing places properly. Book campsites well ahead in peak season to ease pressure on wild spots. Travel shoulder season (May/early June or September) for fewer midges and quieter roads. The Lake District & Peak District loops, England The Lake District and Peak District feature heavily in club and dealer blogs listing the UK’s best touring routes. Lake District highlights Driving a loop from Keswick via Buttermere, Ullswater and Windermere Lakeside walks straight from your pitch Cute villages like Grasmere for tearooms and pubs Peak District highlights Gritstone edges, dales and reservoirs all within short drives Classic routes around Hope Valley, Snake Pass and the Chatsworth area Plenty of well-equipped campsites that are used to motorhomes These areas are compact, so you can base yourself in one campsite for a few nights and explore in smaller hops – ideal for first-timers. Cornwall & the Atlantic Highway (A39), South West England Motorhome travel blogs regularly praise Cornwall’s combination of surf beaches, harbour towns and clifftop campsites, while coastal-route articles single out the Atlantic Highway between Devon and Cornwall as one of the UK’s best seaside drives. Route idea Start near Barnstaple Follow the A39 towards Bude, Padstow and Newquay Continue down to St Ives, Land’s End and the Lizard Why go by motorhome Sea-view campsites where you can have breakfast overlooking the waves Easy access to beaches for surfing, bodyboarding or rockpooling Shoulder-season trips (spring and autumn) feel far more relaxed than school-holiday gridlock Wales: Snowdonia, Anglesey & the Pembrokeshire Coast From caravan-club guides to campervan specialist blogs, Wales always shows up as a top pick for dramatic landscapes in a relatively small area. Snowdonia & Anglesey Mountain roads, slate quarries and castles inland Coastal drives out to Anglesey with its beaches, lighthouses and Beaumaris Castle Plenty of adventure options: hiking, ziplines, kayaking Pembrokeshire Coast 200 A suggested 200-mile coastal loop taking in Tenby, St Davids and countless coves Coastal campsites with clifftop views Brilliant for dolphin-spotting boat trips and coastal walking Add in friendly towns and a strong campsite network and Wales is a seriously underrated motorhome destination. Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland If you like your road trips with a side of legend and lava rock, the Causeway Coastal Route from Belfast to Derry/Londonderry is hard to beat. It’s a favourite in several “top UK road trip routes” lists aimed at motorhome and campervan travellers. Don’t miss Giant’s Causeway and its basalt columns Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge Clifftop ruins like Dunluce Castle It’s a relatively short route, so you can take it slowly, using well-placed touring parks as bases and nipping inland for distillery visits or Game of Thrones filming locations. Europe: stretching your legs across the continent When you’re ready to take your motorhome beyond the UK, Europe is basically one giant playground of scenic roads. Comprehensive European motorhome guides consistently recommend the routes below for first-timers and seasoned travellers alike. ⚠️ Practical note: new EU border systems mean extra checks and, from 2026, a low-cost ETIAS travel authorisation for UK citizens, so always double-check entry requirements before you travel. The Amalfi Coast, Italy Blogs on European campervan road trips almost always include the Costiera Amalfitana – the Amalfi Coast – thanks to its absurd coastal scenery and pastel-coloured cliff towns. Why it’s unforgettable Terraced lemon groves and plunging sea views Iconic towns like Positano, Amalfi and Ravello Easy links to Naples, Pompeii and Vesuvius Motorhome reality check The official coast road is narrow and busy, and several sources caution that it’s not ideal for larger vehicles. A popular motorhome strategy is to base yourself at campsites slightly inland or along the Bay of Naples, then visit the coast by bus, scooter or organised tour. The Romantic Road, Germany Classic Europe road-trip round-ups and dedicated campervan pieces regularly recommend Germany’s Romantic Road, running roughly 350 km from Würzburg to Füssen. Expect

Compact Motorhome Hire – The Roller Team Kronos 665

Compact Motorhome Hire Kronos 665 View Our Motorhomes Roller Team Kronos Compact 665 The Roller Team Kronos Compact 665 – Slimline Style, Big-Motorhome Comfort(Available to hire from April 2026 at Luna Motorhome Hire) If you like the idea of a proper motorhome but hate the thought of wrestling something huge down country lanes, the new Roller Team Kronos Compact 665 should be on your radar. This 2026 model is a slimline coachbuilt motorhome on a Ford Transit chassis, designed to give you the comfort of a full motorhome with the footprint and manoeuvrability much closer to a campervan. From April 2026, you’ll be able to hire the Kronos Compact 665 from Luna Motorhome Hire, making it a great option for UK road trips, festivals and European adventures. Key Facts (at a glance) Based on the 2026 Spec with an automatic gearbox, here is what you are getting. Berths: 4 (two double beds – one fixed rear, one drop-down) Seatbelts: 4 Length: approx. 6.41 m Width: approx. 2.15–2.35 m (slimmer than a standard coachbuilt) Height: approx. 2.85–2.95 m Chassis: Ford Transit Engine: 2.0L diesel, typically 130–165 BHP depending on pack Transmission: Automatic  MTPLM: 3,500 kg – driveable on a standard UK car licence Layout: Fixed rear double bed over a large garage + front drop-down bed Washroom: “Duplex” bathroom with pivoting/swing wall to create a full shower Power & utilities: Solar panel, lithium leisure battery (in many 2026 specs), Truma heating with iNet X control, good fresh-water capacity Driving and size – campervan feel, motorhome comfort On the road, the Kronos Compact 665 feels deliberately “dials-down-the-stress”. It is Under 6.5 metres long and notably narrower than a full-fat coachbuilt Built on a shorter wheelbase Ford Transit chassis for easier cornering and parking Kept at 3,500 kg, so anyone with a standard Category B licence can drive it That combination makes it ideal if: You’re new to motorhomes and don’t want to jump straight into a big A-class You do a lot of exploring on B-roads, coastal routes and through small villages You want to be able to nip into town, supermarket car parks and attractions without feeling like you’re in a bus The Ford cab brings the usual car-like driving position, properly supportive captain’s seats that swivel into the lounge, and modern cab tech such as Android Auto / Apple CarPlay on many UK dealer specs – all of which we’ll be speccing correctly for the Luna hire fleet. Daytime layout – a proper lounge in a compact shell Step inside and the Kronos Compact 665 doesn’t feel like a compromise. Roller Team have used the extra width over a van and the slimline body cleverly:  Front lounge / dinette with two forward-facing travel seats plus a side seat Swivel cab seats to create a sociable space for up to five people Overhead drop-down double bed neatly tucked into the ceiling when not in use Large side windows and skylight for plenty of natural light It’s the classic modern European layout but shrunk to a size that still fits supermarket spaces. For families, the lounge works well on rainy days; for couples, it’s a comfortable place to stretch out with a glass of wine after a long drive. Sleeping arrangements – two proper double beds The Kronos Compact 665 is a true 4-berth with two very usable double beds.  Rear fixed double bed Positioned over a large rear garage, ideal for bikes or bulky kit Electrically height-adjustable on many 2026 specs, so you can trade a bit of garage height for easier bed access if you prefer  Feels snug and private, slightly separate from the main lounge Front drop-down double bed Lowers down over the dinette at night Big enough for two adults – not a “token” kids-only bed Lifts away in the morning, so the lounge is fully usable in daytime For families, parents often take the rear fixed bed and give the kids the “ceiling bed”. For two couples travelling together, both beds are decent enough for adults, as long as everyone is happy to share the lounge space in the evenings. Kitchen – small footprint, proper facilities The mid-kitchen is compact but sensible – more than enough for normal touring:  2-burner gas hob Oven / grill Sink with hot and cold water Good-size fridge with small freezer compartment Decent worktop for a van of this size, with smart use of covers and flip-ups You’re not getting a massive domestic-style kitchen, but you are getting everything you need for proper cooking: breakfasts, pasta nights, BBQ prep, you name it. For many hire customers, that balance – real cooking facilities without losing space elsewhere – is spot on. Bathroom – clever “duplex” washroom One of the clever touches on the Kronos Compact 665 is the wet room with a pivoting / swinging shower wall.  In everyday terms, that means: In “toilet mode” you’ve got a compact washroom with loo and basin Swing the wall across and it transforms into a dedicated shower cubicle, keeping the toilet area drier This design gives you a proper shower in a genuinely compact motorhome, without feeling like you’re washing in the same space as the loo. For longer trips or touring off-grid, that makes a big difference. Storage, utilities and off-grid potential For a slimline motorhome, storage and power are surprisingly strong:  Large rear garage Big enough for bikes, outdoor furniture, kids’ gear or bulky luggage Some dealers offer external shower and BBQ points in the garage as options Interior storage Overhead lockers throughout Wardrobe space near the rear bed Additional cubbies and under-seat storage in the lounge Water & gas Around 100L fresh water tank with a generous waste tank Space for gas bottles (with some models also using an underslung LPG tank) Power Solar panel as standard on many 2026 UK specifications Lithium leisure battery (around 100Ah) on some dealer specs, giving better off-grid performance than a traditional lead-acid battery Truma heating with iNet X control, allowing you to monitor and
